Helpful Tips when cooking rice

1. Ratio of Water vs Rice.

One cup of water is sufficed for one cup of rice, however this often varies with some recipes where two cups is required. Generally 1-2 cups of water is used per cup of rice.

2. Rice varies from batch to batch and with every different crop that is harvested.

Brown rice cooks for longer than white rice. When cooking brown rice increase the cooking time up to approximately 1 hour more, as you would for white rice.

Rice from old crops absorb more water than rice from new crops, so when cooking old rice always add less water (usually ½ -1 cup less of the total water used).

3. Rinsed Rice.

Washing the rice removes any excess starch or contaminants, which can result in sticky or “gummy” rice. Rinsing the rice also improves the whiteness and the quality of flavor. Rice is usually rinsed 2-3 times before cooking.

4. Fluffy Rice.

When rice has finished cooking, use a pair of chop sticks to move the rice around, this improves the texture of the rice when served. Avoid using a fork or spoon if the rice is cooked inside a rice cooker, as it may spoil or scratch the inside of the pot.

5. Avoid additives when for plain rice.

Adding seasoning such as salt or butter to plain rice during cooking, destroys the natural sweet flavor of the rice.

6. Fried rice from leftover rice.

Save your self some trouble and time of cooking new rice, when leftover rice can be used to make fried rice. When storing cooked rice, be sure to refrigerate leftover rice as soon as possible. Refer to food health and safety when storing foods.
