We talk like this all the time! Idiomatic or colloquial language that seems incomprehensible to speakers of other languages! What amazes me is the amount of language where food is mentioned...often with no relevance to the food in question. I came up with the following,wondering if you guys can find any more. Please offer a translation if necessary.

.To have your cake and eat it: To want all possible outcomes to a situation

2. To spill the beans: To tell a secret/ to reveal everything about a situation

3. To be the apple of someone’s eye: to be very precious to someone

4. To sell like hot cakes: very quick selling popular items

5. To be a piece of cake: very easy

6. Take with a pinch of salt: Not trustworthy or reliable information

7. to put all your eggs in one basket: To rely on one option only

8. to be out to lunch: Crazy or mentally suspect

9. To be one sandwich short of a picnic: Ditto # 8

10. A gravy train: An easy or cushy job which is well paid…like a rort

11. That’s the way the cookie crumbles: the natural outcome of something

12. To be a hard nut to crack: difficult to understand

13. To egg someone on : encourage (usually to do something bad)

14. Bad egg : person who is often in trouble

15. Hot potato: something controversial

16. The Cream: The best

17: To milk something: taking advantage

18. Hold out an Olive branch: Try to make peace with adversary/enemy

19. Play gooseberry: Accompany two lovers on a date (emmm…puleez! ..Ed)

20. Butter wouldn’t melt in someone’s mouth: someone who looks innocent but isn’t really.
